Parsons, TN; October 21, 2011

Staying at a marina tonight due to low overnight low temps:
Billy makes this an awesome place to stay!

We set out early this morning while the fog was still burning off -
birds were everywhere you looked.

Really pretty scenery on both sides of the narrow river.

The river cuts into steep hills and expose yellow rocks tinged with orange.

Lady Finger Bluff:
Legend is that in pioneer days, a lady chose to leap to her death
rather than be caught  by attacking Indians.

Occasionally you pass by small cluster of houses
Limestone and shale ledges.

A good place to wait out the rainy, windy, COLD weather.

Tennessee River; October 18, 20111

Turning into the anchorage

Scenery changing with islands and the river starting to get narrow.

Pilot Knob rises more than 200 feet above the river.
It served as a landmark for early steamboats pilots.

Pilot Knob also witnessed a most unusual battle in the Civil War.
It's the only time in history a cavalry force defeated a naval force.

The story goes that this building, used for shipping grain, was
built so well that attempts to destroy it failed. So, officials decided to leave it.

We were excited to see these Great Egrets. They are bigger than white herons.
They have a long thin yellow bill.
Diver harvesting freshwater mussels.
They used to be exported to Japan for seeding oyster for pearl production.
Now harvesting is limited by hand and used for bait.
Parks and boat ramp = people enjoying the river

We've seen lots of turtles. It's hysterical to watch them eating the algae
along the waterline of Lollygag. Yum.

Land Between The Lakes; October 15th - 17th

From the Ohio River,we traveled upstream on the Cumberland River to reach Lake Barkley.
We then took the 1 and 1/2 mile long canal that connects Lake Barkley with Kentucky Lake.
This route will takes us to the Tennessee / Tombigbee  (Tenn-Tom) waterway.

Land Between The Lakes is one of the Nation's largest peninsulas.
The shoreline is undeveloped with secluded coves on lots of wildlife.
