Trent - Severn Waterway; July 16, 2011

Leaving anchor this morning at Lake Katchewanooka

First Lock of the day.
Youngs Point - Lift: 7 feet
Noticed several planes docked next to their boats on Clear Lake

Clear Lake is is 5 miles long -  1/2 mile wide
and hazard free all the way
Then you get into Stony Lake with is aptly named -
scattered rocks randomly scattered throughout

Some of the channel markers are in stones
Lock 28 - Burleigh Falls: Lift 28 feet
Note steps to the right - remains of Lock 29

* What happened to Lock 29 ?? See note after pics.

Pink rocks are scattered in Lovesick Lake

Lots and lots of trees, rocks, islands and rocky islands with trees

Lock 30 - Lovesick: lift 4 feet.
This lock is on an island! Lock operators get to work by boat.
Caution: Don't tie up overnight - raccoon board boats.

Panhandler walking along lock wall

Out of the way anchorage for the night on lower Buckhorn Lake

*The remains of Lock 29 are on the right side of Lock 28. When the waterway was being built, they realized a second lock was not needed at that location, so abandoned it. The blocks that were in place for Lock 29 were used in the steps on Lock 28.
Since the Locks were already numbered, they kept them the same. Thus, the Trent - Severn Waterway does not have a Lock number 29. Interesting, eh?

Trent - Severn Waterway; July 15, 2011

Weedy anchor this morning

Lock20 - Ashburnham; Lift: 12 feet

Swing bridge after the lock is controlled by the lock staff who
bike ahead to open it after opening the lock gates

In the lock with several other boats

Picture below is a hydraulic lift lock.  There are two pans of water. Each weigh 1300 pds. When the lower level is ready, they add 130 tons of water to the upper pan and gravity causes it to go down, raising the lower pan.
It only takes 2 minutes to raise you up 65 feet....whee!

Peterborough Hydraulic Lift lock - Lift: 65 feet

View from the top

This gate folds into the water to open
Lock 22 - Nassau Mills: Lift: 14 feet

Lock 19 - Scott's Mills; Lift: 8 Feet

Both gates are operated manually

Last remaining limestone lock from original construction

The water rushes in through manual valves at the front of the lock.

250 foot jet of water fountain -
close to our anchorage.
Stay far enough away in case the wind changes, eh?

Trent - Severn Waterway; July 13, 2011

Rice Lake is the second largest lake on the waterway
We entered the northeast end and headed southwest about 3/4 way
before turning off and joining another winding river.
The lake is 20 miles long and 3 miles wide.

It's a shallow lake with a long fetch and it chops up quickly,
which we found out when this  rain storm passed through.

Bet we'll find a weedy anchor in the morning, eh?

Lock 13 - Campellford; Lift: 23 Feet
Tied up on the port side in this lock.
The lock-master's job looks easy, but he walks about 11 miles a day
just opening and closing the gates.

Lock 14 - Crowe Bay; Lift: 26 Feet
Campbellford Hydro Generating Station is on the right

Friendly Canadian "cousins" and hydro operators came to have a look
This is what they were looking at, eh?

Houses along the river are referred to as cottages

Lock 15 - Healey Falls; Lift: 22 Feet
Tie up was on port side again - lock gymnastics with climbing
back and forth over the masts today

Top of Lock 15

Flight Lock 16 and 17 was just around the corner
Lift: 27 feet divided in two sections for a total of 54 feet

It was very windy with a lot of turbulence in the lock

At the top of a 76 foot rise in a 1/2 mile

Seymour Lake with lots of islands - Beautiful

Trent River

Narrow channel is marked by "cribs" used by loggers of long ago
to control the logs on the way downstream
Waiting in Hasting, Ontario for the last lock of the day

Lock 18 - Hastings; Lift: 9 feet
