Illinois River; September 15 & 16, 2011

Map showing our stopping points 9/15 & 9/16
9-15-11

Tucked behind an island for the night in Buffalo Park State Park.
The bluff overlooking the river is part of the canyon that
was once used for Indians to capture buffalo.

Plenty of room for barges here....think we will still hide.

Marseilles Lock - 5th lock going down; 25 feet
Good timing as this barge was just leaving so we could go right in.

9-16-11

Not our planned anchorage, but baby its cold outside!
We opted for overnight heat at this quiet quaint marina.

Lots of history here. If you care to read it, click this link.

Starved Rock Lock and Dam - 6th lock going down; 18 feet
Radioed for a lock-though, and were informed it would be 1&1/2 hour due to barge traffic.
We tied up to a "can" and enjoyed our first wait.

The shoreline is steeper in this area with bluffs and some waterfalls.
Note how low the water is - the red channel marker is almost on shore.

Time to head South!

Turkey Vultures waddling along the shore

Illinois River; September 14, 2011

Sugar Island was a good place to hide from the barges!

Dresden Lock and Dam - 22 foot drop
4th lock on the Illinois - you use there ropes and then just leave
them hanging when you exit

Chicago Harbor Lock - constructed to prevent the river from draining
into Lake Michigan

Easing into the skyscraper canyon

Exciting!

Five spectacular miles

Industrial section of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal: p....u

The only life bridge that had to open for us

Where the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and

Made it to Chicago; September 11, 2011

Sailboats racing as we were approaching Chicago.

Leaving Lake Michigan and pulling into Chicago Harbor
From here we will enter the Illinois rivers.

Free anchorage in down-town Chicago.

State Police prowling the anchorage - City police and Coast Guard were just behind them.
Armed and dangerous.
