| Jolly Roger's carved from wood Did you know that flags were an important signal in the 17th and 18th century? Plain black flag was meant to frighten victims into surrendering if they didn't fight. If you saw a red flag on a pirates ship and surrendered and wouldn't be slaughtered.....and of course you could trust a pirate!
